Sun and Essential Oils

Article provided by: Monica Cooper, Essential Oils Representative

The approach of summer means swimming, barbecues, camping, numerous outdoor activities, and one other thing…

Ah yes, those are never fun to deal with. Painful burns, peeling skin, blisters. So we do what we have been taught and slather on the sunscreen. That may prevent a sunburn, but at what cost?
Researchers have found that the ingredients in sunscreen can be doing some major to our bodies, even the so-called “healthy” sunscreens! Here is a not-so-lovely list of their effects:

Disrupt endocrine function
Damage DNA
Accelerate aging
Increase cancer-causing free radicals
Increased mortality rate
Those are some pretty grim side effects. There is plenty of information available about diet changes to improve sun tolerance. Look for those at the bottom of this article. But in the meantime, here are some easy and safe alternatives to toxic sunscreens.

Natural Sunscreen

1 drop lavender or helichrysum essential oil
1 tablespoon coconut oil

Mix together and apply to exposed areas. You may make a larger batch and store it in a jar.

Sunburn Relief

8 drops lavender or melaleuca essential oil
2 tablespoons coconut oil

Mix and apply to sunburned areas frequently.
